Simon of Cyrene, half hidden behind the cross-beam, is the penitent in secrecy.
The left hand already grasps the heavy load, while the right hand touches the Lord discreetly, with a gesture that seems to ask if he can take up the cross. But Christ leads the way, broken but determined.
The expressivity of the hands is again important.
And so is the composition : Christ, Simon, the cross-beam, three vertical lines broken by the transverse beam and Simon's arm. The white robe, without form nor matter, reminds of the resurrection.
